[PERSONALITY]
Knuckles the Echidna is a wild individual, tough as nails and loyal to his duties of protecting the legendary Master Emerald; destined forever to be it's guardian. He has a very competitive side to him that is usually overshadowed by his unwavering duty to protect the Master Emerald and a life of solitude and relaxation. Born a loner, this red echidna can be rather antisocial and distrusting of others. However, granted that the situation pertains to him in the right way, he can be quite gullible, becoming the victim of Doctor Eggman's well staged pleads for help that end up turning him against his friends such as Sonic and Tails. Sometimes, this gullibility can lead him to giving off the vibe that he can be rather thick-headed, given nicknames such as 'Knucklehead' for his rare idiocy.
Otherwise, however, Knuckles is a brave warrior that takes great pride in his work and ability to fight. He will often put down his shifts of protecting the Master Emerald if it means that he must help save the Earth from impending doom, thus placing the gem that he had been protecting for so long in danger. Knuckles does work rather well with others that have the same goals as he does, despite his outer personality portraying a very rough and jagged person, topped off with a molten hot temper.
However, deep down, past the tough guy appeal and his temper that leads him into many fights, some unnecessary, Knuckles has a soft side to him that is rarely seen. And when it is, he's been known to be very gentle and actually kind. He is said to be very shy when the time calls for it, which is most evident by how awkward he can be when being around girls.
[HISTORY:]
Born on an island in the heavens, the blood of his ancestors flows inside him. To be rather truthful, his childhood, his parents, any family, everything remains a complete and total mystery about one Knuckles the Echidna. There is only one link to his past, and that is that he is the last of his kind, and the last of the bloodline of the echidna tribe that were entrusted with the duty of guarding the fabled Master Emerald, a massive jewel that has the power to negate the energy of the equally legendary seven Chaos Emeralds. For the longest time, before the known adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog even began, Knuckles spent the years of his life upon Angel Island, protecting the Master Emerald, alone forever and never having been near anyone that he could remember.
That would soon change, however. Unfortunately...his first visitor to Angel Island wouldn't be a pleasant one. At least, in the long run of matters. Suddenly disrupted from his duties by the Death Egg having crash-landed on Angel Island, Knuckles came upon Dr. Eggman, a scientist that pleaded to heed his warnings as he reconstructed his fully operational space station. A blue hedgehog and a two-tailed Fox would soon emerge on the island, threatening the peace that reigned supreme on this location for so long. Eggman further explained that they had intentions of taking the Master Emerald, his most prized possession. Enraged by the idea that someone would dare do such a thing, this would trigger the first of many instances in where his gullibility would blind him from the truth. Nonetheless, Knuckles the Echidna set off to intercept Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower, whom had just arrived on the island. Coincidentally enough? Sonic happened to be in possession of all seven Chaos Emeralds. How he came to harness these gems, it was unknown, but believing that they were in the wrong hands, Knuckles set out to confiscate them from the hedgehog personally. Surprising even the supposedly invincible might of Super Sonic, Knuckles was successful in defeating him and reverting the blue blur back to his original form, while stealing all seven Chaos Emeralds in the process.
From there on out, it turned into a chase as Knuckles set up multiple traps as he knew Angel Island like the back of his glove. Taking short cuts here and there to make sure that he was always one step ahead of Sonic and Tails. He had attempted to drown them, cut off the power to a circus-esque theme park that Dr. Eggman had created, the man whom Knuckles allied himself with and considered a friend as the two adventurers became his mortal enemies. For the sake of the Master Emerald, he would defend it against anyone who dared to take it away from it's rightful owner. Having scattered the Chaos Emeralds secretly across the island, he believed them to be safe as he continued his efforts to thwart Sonic and Tails. But persistent they were, and they continued to pursue him, never giving up and forever remaining thorns in his side.
It wasn't until the Hidden Palace, which was the resting place and heart of the Master Emerald shrine, that Knuckles had decided that enough was enough. It was time that he put an end to this game of cat and mouse. Confronting Sonic and Tails in a hall in the palace, he faced off against his rivals in a long and harsh battle that endured some time. Exhausted from his battle with Sonic, mid-battle he could hear a rather loud commotion in the other room behind him, which happened to be where the Master Emerald was. Ignoring his enemies to see what the ruckus was about, the ruckus would only escalate as his eyes couldn't help but snap wide in shock at the sight before him. Dr. Eggman, the scientific mind that had helped him fend off Sonic and Tails from stealing the Master Emerald for so long...had betrayed him. Rather, he had actually tricked him. Eggman desired to steal the Master Emerald for himself in order to power his own newly rebuilt Death Egg to wreck havoc upon the world.
He had been turned against those that would have very well ended up helping him fend off the true foe. He had casted them aside, lied to... Enraged by being tricked so easily, and with the determination not to lose the Master Emerald even after being fooled, he jumped onto the Master Emerald that Eggman had a hold of, clinging for dear life as he vowed to never let go. Unfortunately...Eggman's technology was superior to Knuckles' will to hold on after harshly electrocuting him, leaving him to lay there, defeated. But it wasn't over yet. Despite being weakened significantly by the attacks from Sonic and then Eggman, Knuckles forced himself to rise again, promptly followed by Sonic and Tails in pursuit of the madman. It seemed to be too late, however... The Death Egg had already begun to launch thanks to the boundless power of the Master Emerald.
But Knuckles had another idea. Crushing the wall that blocked their path, Knuckles lead his newly established allies to a portal that would lead them to the Sky Sanctuary, a sacred piece of land located in the heavens, much like Angel Island. Leading them through the beginning of the area, sadly, the red echidna would lose the will to carry on, his strength leaving him as he beckoned for Sonic and Tails to push forth in order to rescue the Master Emerald, stop Eggman, and save the world from an impending doom.
He was left with quite some time to atone for what he had done, soon enough, he could see a familiar bi-plane plummeting from the sky, with the Master Emerald in tow. They did it! They rescued the Master Emerald and defeated Eggman! While left with a valuable lesson on trust, the guardian remembered to remember the bravery of others, the bravery of those that even forgave him for all the grief that he caused them. From that point forth, as he watched Sonic and Tails soar off into the distance, searching for a brand new adventure, Knuckles the Echidna looked on at them, not as mortal enemies...but as friends. Friendly rivals.
They would meet again...
But before that could transpire, there was, once, another ridiculous attempt by what appeared to be Doctor Eggman once again! Taunted by an Egg Robo that obviously belonged to the man that tricked oh-so-recently, he discovered that he had once again taken the Master Emerald away. Without Sonic and Tails around to help him, it was time that he proved his worth as a Guardian. This was his island and his island alone, and if god was his witness, a giant egg was just begging to be pummeled and kicked off his island. And so, knowing the island far better then Eggman ever would, Knuckles worked to liberate Angel Island of the pest.
His adventures to retain the Master Emerald once more would lead him to the Sky Sanctuary once more. This time, however, there were no weaknesses to slow him down as he ascended to the top. And so there it was. Guarded by what appeared to be a more menacing metallic copy of Sonic, his old nemesis. And what began was an epic battle against a powerful machine, Egg Robo having been eliminated by the very same enemy. It was Knuckles vs. Mecha Sonic, one of Eggman's finest creations. In the end, despite facing the odds of the mechanical monster achieving a super form of all things, Knuckles proved why he was the guardian of the Master Emerald after defeating Mecha Sonic and taking the Master Emerald back, remaining it's guardian once more. Without the help of Sonic or anyone else, he had incidentally saved the world in the process, returning to a life of solitude as he felt destined to protect the Master Emerald for eternity.
It wasn't a bad gig, really. He was proud to be the guardian of the Master Emerald. And for a short while, peace was bountiful.
And then, that fateful night occurred, and his entire world would be turned upside down and backwards. While resting at the alter of the Master Emerald, seemingly miraculous, the gem shattered into many, many pieces, scattering themselves not only on parts of Angel Island, but far away as well. And the purpose behind it? Who should have guessed that secretly, it happened to be Dr. Eggman who had destroyed it, releasing an ancient being known as Chaos. The god of destruction. Escaping the island, it wasn't long before the entire mass crashed into the ocean, without the gem's power to keep it afloat. Now, Knuckles was left with one option in order to set things right. He needed to collect every remaining piece of the Master Emerald that scattered off to many locations. With no time left to lose, Knuckles took off, eventually making progress in his mission to restore his emerald and his island to serenity. The red echidna would soon happen upon a rather surprising sight. Watching from hiding as Eggman approached an elevator, he noticed a gem in the man's hand that gave off a familiar energy. Deducting it to be a shard of the Master Emerald, he quickly pursued the doctor to the top floor, not wanting to lose any chance he could get. Much to his dismay however, it was no piece of the Master Emerald, as it turned to be a Chaos Emerald. Nonetheless, he was turned into a guinea pig to be tested against his new ally...
The same creature that shattered the Master Emerald on his island. This time there would be an opportunity to get him good for what he had started. Facing off against Chaos 2 whom had just absorbed the Chaos Emerald that Eggman once possessed, in a moderately effortless battle, Knuckles defeated it before receiving some information about Sonic...in regards to the Master Emerald. Sadly, however, this would turn into another turn of events where he happened to be tricked. A fool in the end for being so gullible, the guardian believed in Eggman's story in which that Sonic was collecting pieces of the Master Emerald for himself. While skeptical at first, he continued on his quest, trying his best not to let it bother him too much. It wasn't until he saw for his own eyes...something very familiar. Holding a green gem... From afar it appeared to be pieces of the Master Emerald. Eggman was right! For once...
To believe that he was considering Sonic and Tails friends, until this very point. Taking the doctor's word for gold, he confronted Sonic and Tails once more, demanding that they hand over the emeralds that they had in their possession. Not quite catching on that he was searching for pieces of the Master Emerald, they obviously rebelled which would eventually turn into another brawl between the three. Finally, as Sonic and Knuckles clashed one last time, they hit each other hard enough for Sonic to lose his grasp upon the Chaos Emeralds. Lo and behold, who else but Doctor Eggman to swoop in while everyone was down to take what was rightfully his. Realizing that he was tricked once more by the doctor, Knuckles was belittled by Sonic for being so gullible, earning himself the nickname 'Knucklehead'. Sadly there was no time to play the blame game as Eggman unleashed Chaos 4 upon the trio. Setting aside their differences once more, they were successful in fending off the creature before the mad scientist introduced his masterpiece, the Egg Carrier; comparing it to Chaos as being vastly inferior despite it's incredible power. Leaving Sonic and Tails to take care of Eggman, Knuckles left to venture forth on his quest to recover the Master Emerald once again.
Throughout his journey with collecting the shards, he would eventually be greeted by a mysterious ball of light, a flash blinding him before he would reawaken once more in what appeared to be an ancient establishment of Angel Island. The tribe of the past echidna clan, the shrine of the Master Emerald, a mysterious echidna girl... But these flashes of what felt like dreams would only last so long before he was snapped back into reality. Confused by these visions, but more determined to seek out the remaining shards of the Master Emerald, Knuckles cast his questions aside for the remainder of his journey. After scouring the land, far and wide for the remaining pieces, he was almost finished, collecting them at the altar once more and restoring the emerald. Sadly, however, it was almost complete...with a fair chunk on the top missing.
Fortunately for Knuckles, his luck would soon turn up on his side as the Master Emerald offered a hologram, a location, towards the final pieces of the emerald, which happened to be on the Egg Carrier. Eventually managing to board the aircraft, he was finally successful in tracking down all the pieces of the Master Emerald. There was but one final thing to do in order to remove the remaining obstacle that dared defied his mission. Doing battle with Chaos 6, a being powered by 6 of 7 the emeralds, the odds looked to be against him until he learned to strategize and use Eggman's own brilliance against it, tossing mechanical robots into the beast's mouth and freezing it over before shattering it to pieces. Unlike the other times, it looked as if it was finally over. Knuckles had finished off one of the world's greatest threats, with Sonic pursuing Eggman, and with six Chaos Emeralds in tow, the red echidna soared off of the crashing Egg Carrier, arriving back on the altar of Angel Island and restoring the Master Emerald. With the Island rising back up to the heavens once more, Knuckles was able to return to his duties of guarding the Master Emerald once again, undisturbed until Angel Island spontaneously fell from the sky once again. Bewildered with the fact that despite the Master Emerald being back where it belonged, the island was still falling, Knuckles quickly decided that it had to do with the Chaos Emeralds that he had brought with him. Before he could take off in an attempt to find Sonic for advice on the matter, he discovered Dr. Eggman collapsed on the ground near the altar. Without any regard for his own safety, Knuckles went to figure out what was going on before he was ambushed by Chaos...
It had survived the previous assault, having turned on Dr. Eggman before attacking Knuckles himself. Collapsed and out cold after the attack, the Chaos Emeralds had been stolen, with just one more to find before the world could have very well been destroyed. Despite Sonic and Tails' efforts to obtain the last emerald from the Tornado 2, it was all too late as a reawakened Perfect Chaos leveled Station Square, leaving it in ruins almost instantaneously at the hands of the god of destruction. Despite having absorbed the energy of the Chaos Emeralds, sucking them dry, it was discovered that it had only absorbed the negative power of the emeralds, leaving Sonic to be capable of harnessing their true power in order to clash with the mighty force. Gathering the emeralds along with the others, Knuckles watched on as Sonic was capable of near-effortlessly neutralizing Perfect Chaos and reverting it to it's calmed state, it's gentle side that was once dominant before enraged by incidents of the past. All was well that ended well...
And yet again, Knuckles would soon have to spring into action again when a rather pestersome bat girl named Rouge the Bat eyed his Master Emerald, trying to steal it for her own selfish needs. What once began as an initial struggle for the gem turned into a fight to retain the gem from Eggman who had tried stealing the Master Emerald once more in the scuffle. Left with the dilemma of either forever losing the Master Emerald or tossing his luck into the wind, the echidna ultimately decided for the latter and shattered the Master Emerald, taking the chance to search for all of the pieces once more in a race against Rouge for them. For the longest duration of his quest, it was a back and forth struggle as the two continued to gather pieces of the legendary treasure. His adventures would eventually lead him to reunite with Sonic, Tails, and Amy, reluctantly joining their quest to stop Eggman as this could very well mean he could find shards of the Master Emerald as well. Helping them infiltrate Eggman's desert base and collecting three keys to advance further and vanquishing a ghost that haunted the pyramids, his adventure would eventually take him into outer space.
In a rather frightening yet comical turn of events as Knuckles could sense the shards of the Master Emerald on the ARK and pieces that he had once collected escaping, he attempted to pilot the shuttle before causing the ship they had taken to space to follow Eggman to crash. Finding his own mission more important at the time being, he left the bigger situation for Sonic and the gang to handle as he bailed, scouring the Space Colony ARK for any remains of the Master Emerald. After successfully obtaining three more pieces…he was greeted by an unexpected face. Someone whom he would be wishing to encounter in the first place. He needed to encounter her if he had a shot in reclaiming what was rightfully his. It was through a brief exchange of words before Knuckles raised his fists, in sheer disregard of the fact that it was a lady nonetheless. Rouge the Bat put up an impressive battle, the strength of her legs almost matching his fists. In the end, however, the battle would emerge in a stalemate of sorts, both combatants exhausted. Despite this, Rouge attempted to move once more, only to slip on the beam, a pit of magma boiling and molten, ready to consume all that would enter it.
However, it was not her fate to die today, as a surprisingly generous hand would reach our in an attempt to rescue her. And rescue her he did. Knuckles was successful in saving her life, despite Rouge’s immediate hostility of him touching him. Of course, the guardian did not find this amusing in the least, so he reclaimed his dignity by reassuring her that all he only rescued her to save the Master Emerald. And then, when he expected that he might have had to chase her down or battle her once more, she had done something rather surprising. Unloading her own collected shards of the Master Emerald, she claimed that she didn’t want them anymore, not enjoying the stench of Echidnas. Molding the energy of the mighty gem into one single entity once more, he had completed his mission by recovering the Master Emerald. Before Rouge could take her leave, aware of the fact that the immensely powerful Eclipse Cannon would be fired soon, Knuckles had stopped her, hesitant with his next words for he was not the greatest for apologies or being kind for that matter… “I’m sorry…if I hurt you.” As hard as it was to say such a thing to someone who had tried to steal his treasure, it did take a lot of grief off of his shoulders to say it.
Now there was nothing to do but wait for Sonic to finally put an end to this madness. However, the turn of events would cause a change in his plans. Meeting up with the blue hedgehog again at a later date, with the Master Emerald in tow, the duo made their way back to the control room, just in time to witness the diary of Professor Gerald Robotnik, and his claims of total annihilation. Once all seven Chaos Emeralds were placed aboard the ARK and set into the Eclipse Cannon, it was not meant to fire; rather it was ready to cause the entire Space Colony ARK to collide with the Earth, therefore destroying it. Forced to work together with his enemies, it was up to Knuckles to bring the Master Emerald to core of the ARK in order to deactivate the Chaos Emeralds and save the world. Playing his role along with the others, Knuckles braved the depths of the deep, swimming through many fluids in order to search for an underwater switch to open a doorway for him and Sonic to be able to fight forth and enter the core. Eventually, they were successful, only to be stopped by a prototype of the Ultimate Life Form, the Biolizard.
How they would handle this situation…he didn’t know. He needed to carry the Master Emerald past the beast but there was no way it letting him or Sonic through. It wasn’t until the final product of the Ultimate Life Form made himself known, having come to his senses, that he was able to buy some time for Sonic and Knuckles to climb the altar to place the Master Emerald in place to stop the Chaos Emeralds. Chanting the ancient lyrics to tap into the power of the mighty gem, he was successful in stopping the Space Colony ARK from falling. However, this didn’t stop the supposedly slain Biolizard to make it’s final stand, triggering Chaos Control in order to configure it’s body onto the Space Colony ARK itself, determined to fulfill the doomsday that Professor Gerald envisioned. This time, it was up to Sonic and Shadow, achieving their super forms to do battle with the FinalHazard. In the end, the world was saved, and for a short while, Knuckles was ready to return to the island, solitude in wait as he would continue to protect the Master Emerald.
Peace just wasn’t his friend, it seemed like. Receiving a letter from Dr. Eggman who claimed that he had created the ultimate weapon, challenged him and his friends to try and stop him. Knowing that the doctor was obviously up to no good, Knuckles abandoned his duties for a brief while to find Tails and reach Sonic. It was soon established that the three of them would form an invincible team. Serving as the power to their mighty force, Team Sonic was made, clashing with Dr. Eggman together as they eventually made their way to the Egg Fleet. On the way, the trio were halted by the appearances of the likes of Team Dark and Team Rose. Eventually, they were successful in defeating Eggman…or so they thought. The clouds darkened as lightning clashed in the sky. Soon enough, they were met with the true foe, the one who had been setting up the charade of Eggman’s supposed global domination. But oh no, that was not to be. The mastermind behind bringing everyone together to crush them was none other then Metal Sonic, who had gone mad with power and the desire to finally defeat his flesh counterpart. Upon the way to this final point, the teams had successfully collected Chaos Emeralds together, eventually bringing all seven. With Tails and Knuckles by his side, the three were ready to show Metal Sonic what they were made of, and what teamwork could truly accomplish.
While Team Rose, Team Chaotix, and Team Dark stalled for time, Team Sonic was reborn once again after achieving their super transformations. With the return of Super Knuckles alongside Super Sonic and Super Tails, the trio took to the skies, in pursuit of the Metal Overlord. After a long and hard fought battle, Knuckles’ strength overwhelming Metal Sonic at times, the team was successful in defeating one of their greatest threats. But peace wouldn’t last for much longer afterwards as the earth was threatened again by the presence of the Black Arms, a powerful alien race that shared ties with Shadow the Hedgehog. While not playing an important role in this story, Knuckles was involved in the fight to rescue humanity from another great threat. In the end, it was Shadow who would ultimately save the world, leaving the others to return to a life of peace. And it would leave Knuckles to return to a life of being the Master Emerald’s guardian once more.
But how long would this last…?
